05.22.10: Panther Creek 8k

A race I look forward to every year. It's got a start time a little later than most, is close to home, and as a hiker I enjoy shooting trail races more than road races. MRHC Vice-President and Park Manager John LeCroy took over the reins from the former director in the wake of a few complaints regarding last year's race and made some changes: the hike was scrapped, the kids run was pushed from 9:30 to 10:00, and the race was lengthened to 8k (5 miles) from the 4-miler last year. Attendance-wise it was a little disappointing, with about 85 runners (I suspect dumping the hike may have been a part and the forecast of rain may have kept a few away too). Speaking of rain, that was the biggest problem for your intrepid photographer: keeping his equipment dry, as it started to rain a few minutes before the start and rained off~n~on for about the next 45 minutes. I couldn't go to my usual spot (trailside near the finish line but still in the woods) because of the rain and there was only one spot under the tent where I could get them, essentially right at the finish line.

Ailey Reed was male winner, with Jeremy Donahue second and Jeff Armstrong coming in third. The women's winner was Andee "Punky" Swann.
