06.19.10: Summer Solstice 8k Challenge
What weather we've been having this year. After some of the coldest weather back in January (8 days in a row without ever getting above freezing) things have gone to the other extreme in June and July, with near-record highs, and 6/19 was no exception. Such was the setting for the KTC's annual Summer Solstice 8k Challenge. It's well-known that the heat & humidity and the hills mean that this isn't a PR course (unless it's your first 8k) but it is surprising that in spite of this and the killer hill at the end (the finish chute is at the apex of a 35-50 foot hill) there's some of the best kick races anywhere on the KTC circuit. It's usually very easy to see who's gassed and who still has some in the tank by this hill.
Ethan Coffey & Mary Beth Cates were the winners. Jason Altman & Laura Gearhiser were 2nd overall, and Brent Johnson & Holly Sayne rounded out the top 3 for each sex. No teams, as this is an event limited by the facilities on hand.
